This Mindset Shift Often Leads to More Success and Happiness
How You Think About Your Goal Could Not Only Lead to More Success – But Also Could Make You Happier!
The single biggest mistake my clients make when trying to overcome the challenges and obstacles in their lives stems from the human tendency to focus their energy and attention on the obstacle or challenge. DUH…You say. Before you draw a conclusion, consider this. What you put your attention on tends to expand. So if you continue to put your focus on a problem, that problem remains and often gets worse before it gets better. Conversely, if you focus on the solution of that obstacle or challenge, or put your attention intensely on the ideal vision of your life where you have overcome your challenge or where it simply doesn’t exist, that is where your energy will lead you.
So the first mindset shift is to simply put focus on what you want, not on what you don’t want. Over time, your ability to remain positive will increase as your ability to overcome life’s invariable obstacles and challenges grows stronger and more proficient.
Second, and again, for many, every bit as counter-intuitive is, at some point, you will want to let go of anticipating and yearning for outcomes. That’s right, throw your expectations in the garbage!
WHAT! You say. And I say, YES!
Stay with me here. We can think of several great acts of accomplishment or creativity and within the accomplishment were countless hours of doing something simply for the sake of enjoyment. Great musicians, when composing timeless lyrics, aren’t necessarily focused on possible fame and fortune when immersed in their creative pursuit. They are immersed in creating a beautiful song and the joy felt within the creation itself is reward enough.
Think about the last time you went on a hike in a beautiful location. What held more satisfaction, taking in the beautiful vista as you rise through the ever ascending tundra or arriving back at your car having completed your trek?
The point is, the more you become present and mindful in your current actions, the more you naturally draw out of your experience and the less the outcome matters. This includes your workouts, your eating and any other actions you are drawn to take in your life.
Think about it this way. If you really engaged yourself in your workouts and felt a sincere love in doing it. You are going to put more mental and physical energy in each workout and you are going to continue to do so because you enjoy it so much. Eventually, you will reach a level of fitness and weight that you desire and the whole process will feel effortless.
For me, the same is true with preparing wonderful healthy gourmet meals. I love to plan, shop and the act of cooking itself. Over time, I have created a state of being both mentally and physically that has led to a life of fitness and good health. I also love the feeling as I peck away at the keys right now, reaching out to help others achieve the fitness, health and emotional goals they desire in their lives. I have learned to take the focus off of the bottom line and put it squarely on the help I am providing in the moment. Whether it is personal training, stress relief coaching or writing this material for you here today.
So, immerse yourself in your plan. Put yourself fully into your workout and following your nutrition plan not because an outcome, but because of the love you have for these activities or, at the very least, because of the love you have for yourself.
You’ll find that the enjoyment you get out of life increases and, ironically, the outcomes that you consciously have forgotten seem to manifest faster and easier than you ever dared to imagine.
